Study on the scale and economic dimensions of the EU art market

Project summary

This project delivers a comprehensive economic analysis of the EU-27 art market, encompassing both primary and secondary sectors. It consolidates data on art fairs, gallery sales, auction volumes, imports/exports, employment, wages, and induced spending. The study includes over 40 data visualisations, such as interactive maps of 7,000+ galleries and the geographical distribution of market actors. It also explores structural asymmetries, digitalisation, fiscal regimes, and market polarisation through case studies and stakeholder interviews. The conceptual framework maps the art market value chain and examines how economic and cultural value are created and legitimised.

KEA's contribution

KEA led the project, providing the conceptual and methodological framing of the EU art market and its value chain. The team conducted macroeconomic analysis using public and commercial data sources, developed interactive visualisations, and carried out stakeholder interviews and case studies. KEA also mapped the regulatory and fiscal frameworks affecting the art market and positioned the EU market within a global comparative context. This study sets a benchmark for future EU-focused art market research.
