Study on the role of copyright in facilitating distance learning and research

Project summary

This study explores how copyright frameworks can better support distance education and research. It focuses on public interest institutions such as libraries, museums, universities, and schools, which increasingly rely on digital collections and remote access services. The study aims to map copyright-relevant activities of these institutions, identify legal and practical challenges, and assess opportunities for improving access to digital content. It includes desk research, interviews, surveys, and case studies, and will inform future EU policy development in the area of copyright and digital access. The project also supports a broader copyright awareness campaign launched by the European Commission to build capacity and promote best practices among educators, researchers, and cultural institutions.
