An update on change drivers and economic and legal implications of transfers of players

Project summary

The study analysed developments in the European football transfer market since 2013, focusing on economic trends and legal evolution. It examined the dual nature of transfers as both sporting and economic activities, within the EU legal framework, and highlighted the growth of transfer fees, broadcasting revenues, sponsorship, and commercial revenues. The report also evaluated the impact of stakeholder measures on market growth, noting limited influence. The research provided insights into how European leagues, clubs, and players operate in one of the largest global football markets, offering policymakers and stakeholders evidence to guide future regulatory or economic decisions.
