The Material Cultural Heritage as a Strategic Territorial Development Resource: Mapping Impacts Through a Set of Common European Socio-economic Indicators

Project summary

The project aimed to quantify the contribution of material cultural heritage (MCH) to economic development across stakeholder countries and regions over the past five years. Building on prior work by the European Heritage Heads Forum’s Economic Task Force and the European Commission, the study defined key economic sectors influenced by MCH and collected relevant impact data. The main outcome was a common theoretical and methodological framework to measure the economic impact of MCH, along with empirical evidence and a step-by-step plan to build a monitoring system in the stakeholder countries. The results were intended to support evidence-based policymaking and initiatives during the European Cultural Heritage Year 2018.

KEA's contribution

KEA led Task 1 (Mapping of sectors impacted by MCH) and Task 2 (Definition of the methodological framework). KEA carried out desk research, data collection, analysis, and policy recommendations, helping to develop a monitoring blueprint for socio-economic impact indicators. KEA’s work enabled stakeholders to understand MCH’s economic value and provided a structured approach to ongoing data collection and impact assessment across multiple European regions.
